Acclaimed photographer will discuss work with transgender youth
An internationally-acclaimed photographer, who is known for
photographing transgender youth in The Netherlands over the course of
seven years, will visit Grand Valley on Wednesday, April 4.
Sarah Wong, from Amsterdam, will discuss her experience of
capturing the journey of a group of transgender children from 4-6 p.m.
in room 2263 of the Kirkhof Center.
“Her photographs chronicle the coming of age for the transgender
youth in an environment where they are treated with compassion and
acceptance, and how that type of environment has a huge impact on
their happiness,” said Colette Seguin Beighley, director of the LGBT
Resource Center.
Grand Valley purchased
three sets of Wong’s photos this year; they are displayed in the
Kirkhof Center. Henry Matthews, director of GVSU Galleries and
Collections at Grand Valley, said her visit has been about four years
in the making. “I first met Sarah many years ago in Amsterdam and took
an instant liking to her work,” he said. “Her Transgender Project
could lead others to better understand what it means to be transgender.”
Wong is a graduate of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy for Visual Art
and Design in The Netherlands. She gained international attention when
she created an outdoor exhibit of eight large portraits, titled
“Environmental Boulevard,” which was displayed next to the Van Gogh
Museum in Amsterdam. Learn more about Wong here.
Wong’s visit is sponsored by the LGBT Resource Center, GVSU
Galleries and Collections and the student group Transpectrum. The
event is approved for LIB 100 classes and is free and open to the
public.
