The challenges of multimedia journalism will be the main topic of a
guest presentation by television news director Jill Manuel. Given that
her position is at WEWS, the ABC station in Cleveland, Ohio, she will
also address crucial issues about the election. Manuel’s broadcasting
career has also included stints at CLTV and WBBM in Chicago.
Grand Valley students, faculty and staff members, and the
public, are welcome to the free presentation Wednesday, November 14,
from 4-5:30 p.m. in room 2263, Kirkhof Center, Allendale Campus.
Keith Oppenheim, assistant professor of broadcasting in the
School of Communications, will introduce the speaker and present a
video, “Non-Stop News,” that he produced about multimedia journalism.
He said it gives a very helpful picture as to what is happening in the
industry – and how things have changed so quickly in just the past few
years.
“Jill is someone who really understands the challenges of
transforming an old-school newsroom into a one prepared for the
digital age,” said Oppenheim. “What’s refreshing about her is that she
is the first to say – it’s not easy. She will also have lots to say
about the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Ohio and the election.”
