Bush speaks to students
Barbara Pierce Bush, CEO and founder of Global Health
Corps, told students February 27 that the first thing she looks
for in job applicants is flexibility.
Bush spoke to about 50 Honors College students prior to her evening presentation that was part of the Frederik Meijer Lecture Series. The event was hosted by the Frederik Meijer Honors College.
The former first daughter founded Global Health Corps
in 2008. The organization creates a pipeline of young
professionals who work as fellows on global health initiatives
with partner organizations like the U.S. State Department,
ActionAid International and the Clinton Health Access Initiative.
She said a new cohort of 90 fellows was recently
placed not only in African countries but also in U.S. cities like
Washington, D.C., Newark and Boston. In U.S. cities, fellows work
on issues like homelessness, HIV/AIDS and global literacy.
“We would like to get into rural health issues and that may be our priority in the next year or two,” Bush said.
Global Health Corps accepts applications from new college graduates. Bush said the jobs vary widely.
“We look for people who are culturally sensitive, flexible and work with humility,” she said.
