Final beam being raised for Mary Idema Pew Library

Grand Valley State University students will have the opportunity to leave a lasting mark on the university at a celebratory event for the Mary Idema Pew Library Learning and Information Commons on the Allendale Campus April 12.

Students are invited to sign the final beam that will complete the steel erection for the Pew Library project from 4-5 p.m. near the north side of the library construction site. The event will give students an opportunity to express their gratitude to the donors who made the project possible. Weather permitting, the beam will be raised at the event.

Kate Pew Wolters, former chair and current trustee of Grand Valley’s Board of Trustees, will attend the event for the building that is named for her mother. President Thomas J. Haas and Student Senate President Natalie Cleary will also be in attendance. Light refreshments will be provided and students from Grand Valley’s marching band will perform.

More than 1,400 private donors, students, alumni, and faculty and staff members have provided support and donations for the new facility that will open in the fall of 2013.

The Pew Library will provide 1,500 seats for student study, 20 group study rooms, and offices and support areas for faculty and staff members. There will be room for 150,000 books on open shelves and 600,000 books in an automated storage/retrieval system.
