Grand Valley student Aubrey McMahan, of White Lake, Michigan, was one of only five students in the world to receive a full Ibn Battuta Merit Scholarship for Peace and Diplomacy.

Through the scholarship, McMahan will have tuition and housing costs covered for a four-week session that will be held later this summer in Morroco.

McMahan was selected because of demonstrated excellence and dedication to the study of the Arabic language.

She also earned a Lebanon Summer Fellowship to participate in the 2012 Cultural and Educational Exchange Experience for American University Students. This fellowship is co-sponsored by the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations (NCUSAR) and the Lebanon Renaissance Foundation (LRF).

McMahan was also a 2011 Truman Scholarship Finalist. She plans to pursue a career with the U.S. Department of State and work in the Middle East. She is an international relations major and member of the Frederik Meijer Honors College at Grand Valley State University.
