Grand Valley students who are majoring in diagnostic medical sonography placed first in a research competition at their organization's national meeting.

Brooke Jorgenson, Paige Keech, Kaylee Kellogg and Kelsey Miller traveled to Seattle, Washington, to attend the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography national meeting and present research on breast sonography techniques using elastography. Elastography is used to detect stiffness within the breast.

“We went to an off-campus medical site in Lansing this summer and used their machine to do research on this type of imaging,” said Keech. “We used a chicken breast and put different objects inside it to measure their stiffness and to relate them to different breast pathologies.”

At the meeting, the students presented their research as a poster, “Elastography Used in Diagnostic Breast Imaging.” This is the first time Grand Valley has placed in this competition.

The national meeting also allowed the students to network with professional in sonography.
