New sustainability series kicks off September 25
The Sustainable Community Development Initiative is kicking off a new
monthly series that highlights sustainable efforts of each of Grand
Valley’s eight colleges during the academic year.
The Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies is the September
spotlight, and the kick-off event for the series will feature a live,
virtual presentation by Bill McKibben, environmental and climate
change writer, educator and activist, on Tuesday, September 25.

McKibben is the author of a dozen books about the environment,
including The End of Nature in 1989, which is regarded as the
first book for a general audience on climate change. He is founder of
the grassroots climate campaign 350.org, which has coordinated 15,000
rallies in 189 countries since 2009. Time magazine named him
the planet’s best green journalist and Boston Globe said he
is the country’s most important environmentalist. McKibben is
currently a Schumann Distinguished Scholar at Middlebury College and
he holds honorary degrees from a dozen colleges. He was elected a
fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2011.
