PIC hosts first second-generation visiting scholar
The Padnos International Center hosted its first second-generation
visiting scholar when Michal Kudlacz followed his father's path from
1985.
Tadeusz Kudlacz and two other professors from the Cracow
University of Economics in Poland were among the first international
scholars to visit Grand Valley in 1985.
Michal Kudlacz, a professor of economics at Cracow, said he
discussed visiting Grand Valley with his father, who encouraged him to
go. “I was 6 years old when he came to Grand Valley. He told me to go
because he has a lot of good memories from his time here and GVSU is a
different university,” he said.
While on campus, Kudlacz used library resources to further his
research into large-city development in Europe and the United States.
He also lectured in several classes.
Mark Schaub, chief international officer, helped Kudlacz
recreate a photo his father posed for in 1985. They met Alan Walczak,
who now leads international programs at Davenport University, for a
photo in the Polish neighborhoods of northwest Grand Rapids. In the
1980s, Walczak was a Grand Valley faculty member.
