Speaker and march focus on ending sexual assault

The Women’s Center will host Take Back the Night, a program that focuses on ending sexual assault. The event will take place Wednesday, October 3, from 7-9 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center in the Allendale Campus.

Staceyann Chin, author, advocate and artist, will give a presentation at 7 p.m.; a march around campus will follow. The program is in conjunction with Dating and Domestic Violence Awareness Month at Grand Valley.

Chin, from Jamaica, has appeared on the “The Oprah Show,” and co-wrote and performed in the Tony Award-winning Russell Simmon Def Poetry Jam on Broadway. Her works have been performed in Sweden, South Africa and Australia, and she the recipient of many awards including the 2007 Power of the Voice Award from The Human Rights Campaign.

Take Back the Night is sponsored by the student organization Eyes Wide Open. The event is approved for LIB 100 and 201 classes.
