Students will host reindeer games

Students from the Honors College will play reindeer games in late November as part of a class project that highlights Saami and Inuit culture.
John Kilbourne, professor of movement science, will have students in his Honors College course present an Inuit (eastern Arctic region of Canada) or Saami (Scandinavia) game and teach it to others. Live reindeer from G&G Reindeer Farm in Calendonia will be stationed in a closed area by the Cook Carillon Tower on the Allendale Campus.
Students from area K-12 schools, and Grand Valley students will watch and be able to participate in the games, which are set for Friday, November 30, 9-11:30 a.m. near the carillon tower.
Participants will learn and be able to practice bone games, caribou jump, blanket toss, lassoing, board games and more. Hot chocolate will be provided.
Kilbourne’s course is a seminar for junior honors students, “In Search of the Meaning of Games in Life: A Journey to the Circumpolar World.” His research involves Inuit culture; last year, his sabbatical study took Kilbourne to Norway for a semester.
The reindeer games are supported by the Frederik Meijer Honors College, Padnos International Center, Student Services, and President’s Office.
