University cancels classes for Martin Luther King Jr. holiday

Grand Valley State University has announced that it will cancel classes on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The university will still be open for business on the holiday, January 21, 2013.

Kathleen Underwood, co-chair of the MLK Executive Planning Committee, said canceling classes was supported by both the University Academic Senate and Student Senate.

"While no classes will be held, plans are underway to develop activities on- and off-campus to provide students, faculty and staff members the time to honor the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr., including volunteer opportunities, speakers, as well as the traditional breakfast and march at noon," said Underwood, director of Women and Gender Studies and associate professor of history.
