When results of the myGVSU Survey about campus climate were released in September, it was among the steps needed to create a welcoming environment for everyone.
The next steps include creation of three subcommittees to study survey results and look through different lenses into the issues identified. Dwight Hamilton, assistant vice president for Affirmative Action, said students, faculty and staff members are encouraged to volunteer to serve on the subcommittees.
The Student Subcommittee will be chaired by Marlene Kowalski-Braun, assistant vice provost and Women’s Center director, and Connie Dang, director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs; Staff Subcommittee will be chaired by Kate Stoetzner, director of International Student and Scholar Services, and Aaron Klein Haight, assistant director of Student Life; and the Faculty Subcommittee will be chaired by Debbie Morrow, senior librarian, and Tammy Luce, Campus Dining.
“Each subcommittee will look at the survey results through race, sexual orientation, gender, socioeconomic class, religion and other factors,” Hamilton said.

The myGVSU survey showed that nearly 90 percent of Grand Valley students and 76 percent of faculty and staff members said they are comfortable with the overall climate in their classes and workplaces. Specific populations like the LGBT community, women, and people of color felt less comfortable.
