Grand Valley graduate Carter Brown was evacuated November 11 from the Philippines following Typhoon Haiyan. He's now working to raise funds for emergency aid to that country.

Brown was an intern for the GoAbroad Foundation, which connects people with projects around the world. Brown, who is now living at his parents’ home in Sturgis, was living in Tacloban City and volunteering for a rural health clinic there.

He said there are hardly any standing structures left in Tacloban City, devastated by last week’s typhoon.

“Dead bodies and hungry people are strewn across an island of rubble,” said Brown. “Access to clean water is scarce. All of the grocery stores have either been ruined or looted. The city and island have been completely ravaged by the typhoon. Electricity is out and is expected take at least a month until restored.”

Brown said donations to GoAbroad will be sent to people on ground in the Philippines. Click here for more information.

Brown worked with GVSU graduate Elsa Thomasma, who is staying in the Philippines in an evacuation center.

•• A group of students, led by Ranelle Brew, assistant professor and chair of public health, will collect money in the Kirkhof Center on Friday, November 15, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Brew led students on a study abroad trip to the Philippines in 2012.
