Art Gallery opening reception for magical exhibit

Magic has been a topic of both interest and controversy that has enthralled audiences for hundreds of years. For some it’s spiritualism, and for others it’s strictly a performance art. Both are captured in the new GVSU Art Gallery exhibition in the Performing Arts Center, Allendale Campus.

“Mystery, Magic, and Mayhem: Wonders from the American Museum of Magic,” is an exhibition of magic history and provides a window into the worlds of illusion, conjuring, mentalism, and escape artistry. On loan from the American Museum of Magic in Marshall, Michigan, are more than 30 stunning graphic visuals and related objects associated with legends such as Thurston, Houdini, and Michigan’s own Harry Blackstone, Sr.

An opening reception will be held Thursday, January 17, from 5-7 p.m., with sensory stimulation and confusion provided by magician David Martin.

The exhibition is free and open to the public and continues through Wednesday, March 20. A variety of programs in conjunction with the exhibit include:

• Art Gallery Chamber Music Series of mysterious music by student performers 8 p.m. January 28, February 18 and March 18.

•  "The Art of Magic," presentation by Mark Schwartz, associate professor of anthropology, 7 p.m., February 20

• Student choreography performance, 5 p.m., February 25

• Student composed one-minute music works 6 p.m., March 14, followed by the New Music Ensemble Gallery Competition awards, underwritten by Elaine and Larry Shay.
