Charlene Beckmann, professor of mathematics, received the Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Mathematics Education Award from the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM). Beckmann was honored at the council’s annual conference August 1 in Traverse City.

The award is the highest honor the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics can bestow upon one of its members. Beckmann was recognized for her strong leadership in mathematics education, outstanding contributions toward the development of mathematics curricula, and work to make mathematics accessible and understandable for fellow teachers and students alike.

Beckmann is an active member of MCTM and served as president in 2003. She was instrumental in the development and promotion of the Adventures in Mathematics series published by MCTM, as well as working with Math in Action, Math in the Library and Math in the Museum. She has presented at state and national math conferences and published a book, Teaching and Learning High School Mathematics.
