Campus Dining rolls out compostable cups
Campus Dining is teaming with Pepsi to become the third university
in the U.S. to use its fully sustainable cups.
The new cups are part of efforts to support and align with Grand
Valley’s sustainability initiatives.
Bill Kinter, sustainability intern for Campus Dining, said the
entire cup is compostable, including the straw and lid, which makes it
easier to place in compost bins located in dining spaces.
Kinter said the cup is manufactured using two-thirds of the
energy it takes to make paperboard from renewable recourses. It is
made in the U.S. and uses paper from trees certified through the
Sustainable Forestry Initiative.
This is the latest sustainable initiative from Campus Dining.
Students on Campus Dining’s Green Team help at campus events, such as
football games and the all-campus picnic, to educate people about
recycling and reducing waste. The office also participates in the
campus-wide Recyclemania competition.
