Commemoration of King's legacy expands with new award

Grand Valley's commemoration of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will expand in 2014 with the presentation of the first Faculty and Staff Service Award.

Jeanne Arnold, vice president for Inclusion and Equity, said it is important to honor an individual on campus who exemplifies the spirit and philosophy of King. “We want to recognize the efforts of a campus leader who is committed to diversity and who continues the university’s mission of inclusiveness,” she said.

The Faculty and Staff Service Award will be presented during Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Week, January 20-25.

Another honor, the Community Service Award, will be presented that week to a West Michigan business or organization that best portrays the spirit of King’s teachings and examples. Last year it was presented to Steepletown Neighborhood Services.

The deadline to submit nominations for either the Faculty and Staff Service Award or Community Service Award is November 1. Criteria for both awards are listed online at www.gvsu.edu/mlk, click on “MLK Awards.”
