GRPS students experience life as a college student
About 33 incoming ninth grade students from Grand Rapids Public
Schools visited Grand Valley June 11-14 to experience life as a
college student.
The visit was part of the Michigan Gaining Early Awareness and
Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) initiative, a college
awareness program at Grand Valley that provides academic support and
encouragement to students from Grand Rapids.
The students, from Gerald R. Ford and Riverside middle schools,
toured campus, including classrooms, computer labs and campus dining restaurants.
The GEAR UP program received a $52,400 grant in March to
continue through 2018 from the U.S. Department of Education and the
State of Michigan. The program is coordinated by staff members in
Grand Valley’s Office of Multicultural Affairs.
Bobby Jo Springer, associate director of OMA and GEAR UP program
manager, said nearly 500 students will visit Grand Valley by the end
of the summer. The program also supports current GRPS seventh grade
students.
GEAR UP is a national effort and all 15 public universities in
Michigan have a program.
