GVSU will host NCAA outdoor track and field championships

Grand Valley will host the 2014 NCAA Division II men's and women's outdoor track and field championships in May.

Head coach Jerry Baltes said more than 750 student athletes from around the country will participate in the championships, set for May 22-24 at the Grand Valley track and field stadium.

Co-host for the championships is the West Michigan Sports Commission.

Baltes said the original host institution, Saint Augustine’s University, would not have facility upgrades completed in time for the championships. “So the NCAA called on us to see if we could take it on,” Baltes said. “Our administrative staff put their heads together and figured out we could put on a great championship.”

The Laker women’s outdoor track and field team finished in a tie for third place at the 2013 NCAA Division II championships.
