Historical and societal impacts of the colonization of the
Americas, and movements that challenge the holiday, will be discussed
at an event on Columbus Day, October 14.
“Rethinking Columbus” will be held 6-8 p.m. in the Cook-DeWitt
Center on the Allendale Campus. A panel discussion will be moderated
by Native News Network’s Levi Rickert, and a drum circle and local
artist will be featured.
The event, approved for LIB 100 and 201 classes, is part of
Grand Valley’s Hispanic
Heritage Month celebration.
The celebration will conclude October 16 with a discussion about
domestic violence in the context of immigration. The event, from 7-8
p.m. on the Pew Grand Rapids Campus, is in collaboration with Grand
Valley’s Community Reading Project, the Hispanic Center of West
Michigan and the Women’s Center.
