Jim McHale named chair of Johnson Center's Leadership Council

James E. McHale, vice president for programs at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF), was recently named the new chair of the Leadership Council for Grand Valley State University’s Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy.

The Leadership Council is a group of philanthropic leaders who serve as partners and friends of the Johnson Center. Its function is to help the Johnson Center identify ways it can more effectively fulfill its mission of connecting nonprofit success and philanthropic practice.

At WKKF, McHale works across all programming areas to ensure effective programming strategies, teamwork, policies, philosophies, and organization-wide systems. 

Before joining WKKF in 1993, McHale was a program associate for the Council of Michigan Foundations (CMF) in Grand Haven; as a development manager and marketing specialist for Hackley Hospital in Muskegon; and as a development associate for St. Mary’s Health Service in Grand Rapids.

McHale also founded Camp Catch-A-Rainbow, a summer program for children with cancer, along with helping to establish the first camp for children with cancer in Russia. He also co-founded Kalamazoo Special Skiing, a program that trains the blind and physically disabled how to downhill ski. Jim has served on served on numerous national, state, and local boards, including the Boards of the Better Business Bureau-Wise Giving Alliance, Legacy Scholars, Family Y Center, the Community Prayer Breakfast, Minority Health Advisory Board, Teen Pregnancy Advisory Board, Urban League, United Way, Coalition of Community Foundations for Youth, Michigan’s Children, Battle Creek Health Systems and chaired the 2000 Greater Battle Creek United Way Campaign.

The Johnson Center is an Academic Center at Grand Valley State University that works locally, nationally, and internationally with foundations, other grantmakers, and nonprofits to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the charitable sector.
