Thousands of books are on the move as Grand Valley empties the shelves of Zumberge Library, built in 1969, and stocks the shelves of the new Mary Idema Pew Library Learning and Information Commons, scheduled to open June 24.

For three days, beginning May 3, most of the 145,000 books in Zumberge will be moved in sequential order on rolling carts to the Mary Idema Pew Library, with space for 150,000 books on open, browsable shelves. An automatic storage retrieval system will have an additional capacity of 600,000 items.

The new library will also provide three times the seating space that was available in Zumberge, and include group study rooms and a Knowledge Market with consultants to help students with research, writing and presentations.

Though Zumberge Library closed its doors to patrons April 26, library services and all the appropriate materials needed for spring semester are being provided in the Thornapple Room, 0058 Kirkhof Center, the library’s public location until construction is completed.
