Pendulum reinstalled November 12

The bifilar pendulum, part of a sculpture created by artist Dale Eldred, will be reinstalled as part of the site reconstruction November 12, outside of the Padnos Hall of Science on the Allendale Campus. The pendulum was removed September 16 because of safety concerns; workers discovered the cable holding the pendulum was frayed from an increased number of students riding the pendulum. Other repairs were also necessary.

Tim Thimmesch, associate vice president for Facilities Services, said educational signs about the artwork, made by faculty and staff in the Physics Department and Art Gallery, will soon be installed as part of the ongoing project.

“The new installation will be representative of a scientific art exhibit and include a reconstructed site that limits access and complements the original intent of the sculpture,” said Thimmesch.

The reinstallation committee included students from engineering, physics and Student Senate, Facilities Services and Planning staff, Art Gallery staff, representatives from Student Services, and a representative from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

The project is expected to be completed December 6.
