A unique social justice activity on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 21, will give participants a better understanding of what it's like to live in poverty.

The Women’s Center will host poverty simulations, with help from Access of West Michigan, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center, Pere Marquette Room.

Brittany Dernberger, assistant director for the Women’s Center, said simulation participants will leave their identities at the door and interact with mock social service agencies.

The event will include an introduction, the actual exercise, and a debriefing period in which participants will share their reactions and experiences. To conclude the workshop, volunteer staffers will share personal stories of living in poverty or working with people in poverty.
