Students raise money for Make-A-Wish
Students in Grand Valley’s Hospitality and Tourism Management
program turned a classroom assignment into a fundraiser for
Make-A-Wish Michigan, donating a total of $2,396 to the organization
from five events.
Students enrolled in HTM 240, a meetings and events course, had
to plan an event as part of learning the course objectives. They
worked in teams to set goals, determine concepts and themes, conduct
needs assessments, implement event logistics, and market an event of
their choosing. Events varied from a “Girl’s Night Out,” to “Bowling
for Wishes,” to dodgeball and basketball tournaments.
One of the events, “Rock for Wishes,” was held in April at the
B.O.B. in downtown Grand Rapids, and featured five bands. Hundreds of
students and community members attended the show, which alone raised
$1,011.
Make-A-Wish Michigan is an event organization
granting wishes to children and their families who face a
life-threatening illness. In 2012, MAWM granted more than 400 wishes
to Michigan children, with the largest percentage of referrals coming
from the Grand Rapids area.
