"The Shape of Things" set for Performance Studio Series

Grand Valley’s Performance Studio Series will feature “The Shape of Things,” a play about a college student who falls in love with a woman who changes everything about him – for better and worse. The play deals with themes such as art, love and the lengths people will go to for both.

The play contains strong themes and is recommended for mature audiences. Performances run Friday and Saturday, February 22-23, at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, February 23-24, at 2 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center, Louis Armstrong Theatre. Director Jason Flannery, a senior theater student, emphasized themes such as censorship and cruelty that stood out to him in playwright Neil LaBute’s original script. He also strove to create realistic characters.

“When I direct a show, I try to put enough humor into it to make it seem life-like,” said Flannery. “I get excited when we discover something new about the characters and can share that with the audience.”

The Performance Studio Series allows upper-level theater students to put into practical use the skills they learn in class through directing, lighting, set design and costume design. For more information visit www.gvsu.edu/theatre.
