Community as Classroom meets November 21
A series of colloquia with Grand Valley faculty, staff members and
community partners to explore community as a classroom continues
Friday, November 21, with the topic, “Pairing Student Development with
Community-Based Learning.”
The meeting will be held from 10-11:30 a.m. in the Kirkhof
Center, room 2270.
Participants will have the opportunity to discuss student
development theory and use case studies to talk about how student
development and community-based learning come together. Marlene
Kowalski-Braun, assistant vice provost for Student Affairs, will
provide methods to design in- and out-of-class activities that align
with student capabilities and developmental readiness.
Participants will also:
• Learn about relevant student
development theories and how to apply them in a community-based
learning course;
• Identify and define student learning and
development objectives for community-based courses;
• Explore how
to work with community partners to establish realistic expectations
for the students engaged in a community-based learning experience.
The series is hosted by the Center for Scholarly and Creative
Excellence, Community Service Learning Center, Division of Inclusion
and Equity, Office for Community Engagement, Pew Faculty Teaching and
Learning Center, University Libraries and Women’s Center.
