A project that had a student and faculty mentor researching unpublished works of a 19th century composer will come to fruition during concerts in Allendale and the musician's hometown in Missouri.
Holly Cassell was a Student Summer Scholar. She worked last summer with Lisa Feurzeig, professor of music, to research the published and unpublished works of William Henry Pommer, a German-American composer.
A series of concerts will celebrate their ongoing project. Grand Valley student and faculty musicians will perform Pommer’s works on Friday, March 14, at 8 p.m. in the Cook-DeWitt Center. The public is invited to the free performance.
On April 4-5, Cassell and Feurzeig and five Grand Valley faculty will travel to Hermann, Missouri, for two concerts in collaboration with Janice Wenger, a University of Missouri-Columbia faculty member who is a Pommer expert.
Cassell wrote commentary for the recordings of these concerts,
which will be part of a new auditory exhibit at the Deutschheim State
Historic Site in Hermann. Feurzeig said there are almost no recordings
of Pommer’s music.
