Palestinian-born author to discuss "Healing Children of Conflict"

Palestinian-American author and humanitarian Susan Abulhawa was born to Palestinian refugees of the 1967 war, when Israel captured what remained of Palestine, including her family’s traditional home in Jerusalem.

Now living in Pennsylvania, the human rights activist is a frequent political commentator and the founder of Playgrounds for Palestine, a children’s organization upholding the rights to play for children living under Israeli military occupation in Palestine and in refugee camps elsewhere.

Abulhawa is the author of the novel Mornings in Jenin, a dramatic story that relates one family’s journey through six decades of Palestine-Israeli tension. Kirkus Reviews stated the novel “reminds us that amongst the shocking headlines it’s the human story that matters most... A powerful and moving piece of fiction.”

Her visit is cosponsored by Grand Valley’s English Department, Middle East Studies program, Modern Languages and Literatures, the student group Peace M.E.ans and Healing Children of Conflict. HCC is a volunteer-led nonprofit in Grand Rapids that heals families and communities by facilitating medical treatment for children seriously wounded in conflicts involving the U.S.
