Reeds Lake steamboat shipwrecks survey postponed
An underwater survey of Reeds Lake has been postponed.
A group of Grand Valley State University anthropologists,
archaeologists, historians and local divers were scheduled October 3
and 4 to embark on an underwater survey of two steamboat shipwrecks in
Reeds Lake located in East Grand Rapids.
Due to
questionable weather forecasts, the team has postponed the dives. New
dates have not been decided upon at this time, but the team expects to
complete multiple dives throughout the winter and early spring of
2015. New dates will be announced once they have been scheduled.
The collaborative project, funded by Grand Valley’s Center for
Scholarly and Creative Excellence, is being conducted by Mark
Schwartz, associate professor of anthropology; Mark Gleason, assistant
professor of tourism and hospitality management; Matthew Daley,
associate professor of history; the Marine Technology Program at
Alpena Community College; the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric
Administration; the archaeology department of Michigan’s Department of
Natural Resources; and the East Grand Rapids History Room.
