Students recognized for dedication to community service
Eighteen Grand Valley students received awards from the Michigan
Campus Compact for their dedication and commitment to community
service during the 18th annual Outstanding Student Service Awards,
held April 12 in Lansing. More than 500 students from 34 campuses
received awards.
Jessica Mac Vane, president of Pals Student Mentors, received
the Outstanding Community Impact Award, which is given to students who
have made service an integral part of their college experience.
Bill Kinter, president of the Student Environmental Coalition,
received the Commitment to Service award, which is given to students
for the breadth or depth of their community involvement or service
experiences.
The Heart and Soul Award, which recognizes students for their
time, effort and personal commitment to their communities through
service, was given to 16 Grand Valley students: Sherri Anderson,
Katlyn Bales, Sara Anne Bartles, Tina Daniels, Rosa Fleming, Ellyn
Goncer, Callie Higgins, Robert Mathews, Cassie Miles, Erin Pollock,
Kelsey Rice, Shannon Riffel, Alison von Werder and Lauren Wagner.
Michigan Campus Compact is a coalition of college and university
presidents committed to fulfilling the public purpose of higher
education. It promotes the education and commitment of Michigan
college students to be civically engaged citizens, through creating
and expanding academic, co-curricular and campus-wide opportunities
for community service, service-learning and civic engagement.
