The second annual Superior Awards were presented at a reception on February 26 in the Mary Idema Pew Library.

Named for Lake Superior Hall, the awards recognize School of Communications advertising and public relations student work that is “superior” in quality. Frank Blossom, affiliate professor of advertising, and Tim Penning, professor of public relations, developed the Superior Awards in 2013. Adrienne Wallace took over this year to help produce and coordinate the event with Blossom.

Winners each received $100 in prize money or gift cards donated by the School of Communications, alumni, area companies, and advertising and public relations firms. Judging was done by recent alumni working in the fields of marketing, advertising and public relations.

“The Superior Awards recognize students who go beyond the basic classroom assignment,” said Blossom. “During the ceremony, students also had the opportunity to engage with professors, alumni and professionals, while reviewing the work of their peers.”

Winners include:
CAP 310: Atikh Bana, Zac Rinvelt, and Zack Salisbury
CAP 315: Natalie Topalain
CAP 321: Jerika Gomez
CAP 413: Rachel Hurst
CAP 423: Audra Hartges
Best of Show Advertising: Rachel Hurst and Natalie Topalian
Best of Show Public Relations: Audra Hartages

Participating students expressed gratitude for the judges who took time to review their work. “We are lucky to have professionals who are interested in helping the next wave of students entering the field,” said one student winner, Zach Salisbury.
