As part of the Community Reading Project, a medical ethics expert will visit campus next week to give a presentation on health care delivery during a crisis or disaster.

Joseph J. Fins is the professor of medical ethics and chief of the division of Medical Ethics at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. His presentation, “Health Care Delivery: Whither Professionalism When Disaster Strikes?” is set for Monday, February 23, at 6 p.m. at the L. William Seidman Center. The event is free and open to the public.

The CRP selection for this year is "Five Days at Memorial" by Sheri Fink. The bestseller recounts the period after Hurricane Katrina in a New Orleans hospital.

Brian Jbara, director of Integrative Learning and Advising, said Fins will discuss the role of health care providers when man-made or natural disasters strike.

Fins is the author of more than 250 publications. His most recent book is “A Palliative Ethic of Care: Clinical Wisdom at Life’s End.” Fins is also an attending physician and director of medical ethics at New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center, and serves on the adjunct faculty of Rockefeller University, where he is a senior attending physician at Rockefeller University Hospital.

Co-sponsors with the Office of Integrative Learning and Advising for the event are Koeze Business Ethics Initiative, Kirkhof College of Nursing, and Priority Health.

Fink will visit the Grand Valley campus and Herrick District Library in Holland in March for presentations on her book. Visit www.gvsu.edu/read for more information.
