On the heels of the 87th Academy Awards, two Grand Valley film and video production students recently received their own golden statuettes.

Under the supervision of Kim Roberts, associate professor of film and video production, Mayna Duarte and Arthur Bowman III were awarded a Gold Pixie Award for their project called, “Tapping In: Stop.Think.Connect.” The video can be viewed below:

The annual Pixie Awards honors outstanding work in motion graphics, visual effects and animation. The project, commissioned by The Department of Homeland Security and the West Michigan Cyber Security Commission, was honored for its “exceptional motion graphics.”

Duarte said the goal of the video is to increase awareness regarding steps that should be taken on the Internet to protect individuals from hacking threats.

“We spent a lot of time perfecting our graphics,” said Duarte. “We wanted them to look as legitimate as possible, that way when people saw the video, they would realize that’s exactly what hackers do.”

Bowman added it was a privilege for the students to be able to work on such an extensive project.

“This award has affirmed that our graphics were successful. It was a great gift to us to be able to work on a project such as this one. I’m proud to have this in my portfolio,” Bowman said.

Barb Hiemstra, a member of the West Michigan Cyber Security Commission, said choosing to work with students from Grand Valley was an easy decision.

“We approached GVSU’s Film and Video program because they have a great reputation for film production in our area. We were excited after the first meeting with GVSU’s team and they did an awesome, professional job,” Hiemstra said.

Roberts added that winning such a prestigious national award is no small feat.

“This award is a testament to the long hours and hard work that is involved in creating motion graphic effects that are worthy of recognition by experts,” Roberts said. “Several of our film and video production students and faculty were involved throughout the product and they all deserve praise.”
