It’s been a good winter for mechanical engineering major Garrett Goodwin.
In late January, Goodwin won a gold medal at the adaptive
snocross event at the Winter X Games held in Aspen, Colorado. On
February 9, he was recognized by state lawmakers with a proclamation
in Lansing.
Lt. Gov. Brian Calley presented the proclamation to Goodwin
during a business summit on disability employment. Grand Valley
President Thomas J. Haas also attended.
Goodwin is a repeat visitor to the Winter X Games. He first
raced in 2012, using a Ski-Doo equipped with a special seat he and his
sponsors made. He won a bonze medal at the X Games in 2013 and a
silver in 2014.
Goodwin was racing a motorcycle in July 2011 when he hit a jump
and the bike rotated forward. His motorcycle landed on top of him. He
broke three vertebrae, suffered a concussion and a separated shoulder;
Goodwin is paralyzed below his waist.
Seven months after that accident, he was ready for the snocross
circuit after receiving a sled from American Metalcraft.
