Grand Valley, Consumers Energy to break ground on solar gardens project

Officials from Grand Valley and Consumers Energy, along with local, state and federal officials, will break ground on a new solar gardens project October 2.

The Grand Valley Board of Trustees in July approved an easement agreement with Consumers Energy on seven to 14 acres on the Allendale Campus, south of Pierce Avenue near 48th Avenue. Consumers will be responsible for 100 percent of all construction and operating costs.

The groundbreaking ceremony will take place on the east side of the Kirkhof Center on the Allendale Campus at 11 a.m. Remarks will be made by Grand Valley President Thomas J. Haas; Dan Malone, senior vice president of energy resources at Consumers Energy; and John Quackenbush, chairman of the Michigan Public Service Commission.

The electric generating facility, scheduled to be completed in 2016, is the largest community solar project in Michigan.
