Grand Valley to host pow wow April 11-12

The Native American Student Association at Grand Valley State University will host an indoor spring pow wow April 11-12 to raise awareness about Native American culture and tradition. 

The 17th annual Spring Pow Wow will take place in the Fieldhouse on the Allendale Campus. Hundreds of people are expected to attend, including people from Native American communities in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Indiana and Wisconsin. 

The event, which is free and open to the public, will celebrate traditional Native American dancing and music. Each pow wow will begin with a Grand Entry, when performers line up by dance style and age and enter the arena while the host drum sings a song. 

Saturday, April 11: 

2–5 p.m.: Grand Entry

5–7 p.m.: Break

7–10 p.m.: Grand Entry

Sunday, April 12:

12 p.m.: Grand Entry

4 p.m.: Pow wow ends

There will be a silent auction, and Native American art, jewelry and cuisine will be available to purchase throughout both days.
