High school students on 40 teams from across the state are gathering at Grand Valley State University March 20-21 to compete in the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics District Competition.

The teams will compete in the Fieldhouse Arena on the Allendale Campus with robots they built and designed for the competition. This year’s game is “Recycle Rush,” which challenges teams to score points by stacking totes and capping them with recycling containers. All game pieces are made of recyclable materials.

The competition helps students get hands-on experience solving real-world problems and discover the excitement and rewards of science and technology careers. The teams had six weeks to design and build the robots for the competition.

Winners will move on to the state championship April 8-11 at the DeltaPlex Arena in Grand Rapids. The national competition will take place in St. Louis, Missouri, April 22-25.
