The Grand Valley football team kicks off its season tonight in a blackout game against Southwest Baptist University at Lubbers Stadium at 7 p.m.

The game will be webcast live at gvsulakers.com and at gvsu.edu/livestream, and can be seen on TV in West Michigan on Xfinity 900. It will also be broadcast on 96.1 FM.

The season opener features an opponent the Lakers have never faced before in the Bearcats from SBU, who hail from Bolivar, Missouri as part of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Bearcats finished the 2014 season with a record of 4-7.

Grand Valley State is 27-17 in season-opening games, with a 14-6 record when opening the season at home, 12-10 when opening the season on the road and 1-1 at a neutral site.

Grand Valley State is in its 45th season of football and boasts a 359-134-3 all-time record. GVSU's .730 winning percentage tops all Division II schools and is third all-time in all divisions behind Notre Dame (.733) and Michigan (.731).
