Scholar to discuss Native stereotypes in pop culture

A scholar and activist who is passionate about reframing how the world sees contemporary Native cultures will give a presentation November 17 as part of the Professionals of Color Lecture Series. 

Adrienne Keene's presentation, "Conversation on Cultural Appropriation and Pop Culture," will take place from 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. in the Cook-DeWitt Auditorium on the Allendale Campus. 

Keene is the creator of Native Appropriations, a blog that discusses cultural appropriation and stereotypes of Native (American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian) peoples in fashion, film and music. She received a doctorate from the Harvard Graduate School of Education where she researched college access for Native students. 

The annual Professional of Color Lecture Series is organized by the Office of Multicultural Affairs. The next lecture will take place February 26 with a lecture by Linal Harris, vice president and chief diversity officer for U.S. Cellular.
