Scholarship created in memory of alumnus who died battling wildfires

A Grand Valley State University scholarship has been created in memory of Richard Wheeler, an alumnus who died last week while battling wildfires in Washington.

The Richard Wheeler First Responder Memorial Scholarship will be available to students who are dependents of those who have fallen as first responders, including firefighters, police officers and paramedics.

Wheeler, from South Haven, graduated from Grand Valley in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in natural resources management. He was one of three firefighters who died in Twisp, Washington.

The Grand Valley flag on the Allendale Campus will fly at half staff for 30 days, starting August 24, in memory of Wheeler.

"We are deeply mourning the loss of Rick," said Neil MacDonald, chair of the Biology Department. "Rick was a very hard working and diligent student. He was pursuing what he wanted in life, and we are all extremely proud of him."

A memorial service is being planned.
