Students recognized for commitment to community service

Thirteen Grand Valley students received awards from Michigan Campus Compact for their dedication and commitment to community service during the 19th annual Outstanding Student Service Awards, held April 18 in Lansing. More than 240 students from 30 campuses received awards.

Kanyn Doan received the Outstanding Community Impact Award, which is given to a select six students for their outstanding commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. Doan, a junior majoring in women and gender studies and minoring in philosophy, is an ambassador of the Women’s Center and leads the center’s Days of Service.

Grand Valley student Ellyn Goncer received the Commitment to Service Award, which was given to 37 students statewide and recognizes students for their dedication to community involvement of students. 

The Heart and Soul Award, which recognizes students for their time, effort and personal commitment to their communities through service, was given to 11 Grand Valley students: Brittany Bajo, Leah Campau, Aaron Christiansen, Jon Cook, Toni Floback, Ashley Grzywacz, Katie Mehrer, Bradley Mesclier, Molly Stoll, Danielle Tanner and Caitlin Wood.

Michigan Campus Compact is a coalition of college and university presidents committed to fulfilling the public purpose of higher education. It promotes the education and commitment of Michigan college students to be civically engaged citizens, through creating and expanding academic, co-curricular and campus-wide opportunities for community service, service-learning and civic engagement.
