Sustainability Spotlight to give overview of campus efforts

Students, faculty and staff members will have an opportunity to learn about new sustainability activities on campus at Sustainability Spotlight September 15. 

The event, sponsored by the Office of Sustainability Practices, will take place at the Mary Idema Pew Library Learning and Information Commons multipurpose room from 6-9 p.m.

Yumi Jakobcic, campus sustainability coordinator, said the event allows various departments and individuals involved in making Grand Valley more sustainable to collaborate.

The event will feature brief talks by several presenters, followed by a reception where attendees and presenters can network and share ideas.

“If something strikes a chord, you can speak with the presenters after in a less formal setting,” said Jakobcic.

The event will feature the following presenters and their topics:

  • Chelsea Brehm – faculty member in Movement Science Department, new “Sustainability in Sport” course
  • Youssef Darwich – farm manager, Sustainable Agriculture Project
  • Jim Penn – associate professor of geography and planning, research on the Amazon
  • Hannah Mico – student, “Sustainable You” health fair
  • Anna Hill – student, Green Team 
  • Sandy Parker – Mindfulness exercise
  • Erik Nordman – associate professor of biology, green infrastructure
  • Alex Melton – student, internship with City of Grand Rapids
  • Anne Marie Fauvel and Kali Smolen – affiliate professor of liberal studies and student, Beekeeping Club
  • Tyler Miller – resident assistant, upcoming sustainability programming in housing
