Sustainable Agriculture Project to start season with tilling demonstration

Grand Valley State University's Sustainable Agriculture Project will mark the start of its summer growing season with a tilling demonstration May 22 at 10 a.m. at 4539 Luce St. in Allendale.
Tilling is an agricultural method that prepares soil for seeding, removes weeds and enhances soil nutrients. The traditional tilling method of a set of horses guiding a tiller cart through the soil will be demonstrated.
The SAP open house is free and open to students, faculty and staff members. A free lunch prepared with produce grown at SAP will be prepared. Anne Hiskes, dean of the Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies, will make remarks at noon.
SAP is a collaborative, hands-on space that was established in 2008 and includes two hoophouses used for fall and winter vegetable production and a community supported agriculture program (CSA).
