More than 60 students from 23 Michigan high school and home school orchestras will join the GVSU Symphony Orchestra for a day of rehearsals and master classes, as well as an evening concert during this year’s String Leadership Day.
Beginning October 17 at 9 a.m. in the Performing Arts Center on the Allendale Campus, students will rehearse under the direction of Grand Valley music faculty and this year’s guest conductor, Raphael Jimenez, orchestra director at Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Select students will have the opportunity to perform solos for a chance to be nominated as “Best of the Day,” allowing them to perform their solos during the evening concert, which will take place at 7 p.m. in the Louis Armstrong Theatre located in the Performing Arts Center. The evening concert is free and open to the public.
“String Leadership Day is an invaluable experience for these high school students who get to work with a top conductor, work collaboratively with Grand Valley students, gain friendships and learn a great deal about making music during the sectionals, rehearsals and master classes,” said Henry Duitman, GVSU Symphony Orchestra director.
The day’s activities and sessions will also include a mini-recital by the GVSU Faculty String Trio, as well as a performance by the GVSU Chamber Orchestra during the evening concert.
