The third of three candidates for the position of vice president for
Inclusion and Equity gave a presentation January 22 in the Kirkhof Center.
Jesse M. Bernal is director of the Office for Diversity and
Inclusion at Santa Clara University in California.
Bernal said he envisions Grand Valley as the model for equity and
inclusion among public, comprehensive regional universities.
“That means being a campus that is willing to take risks and be bold
about equity work, where we embody an entrepreneurial spirit that
pushes the limits and pushes us further where we not only respond to
national trends but are able to set trends when it comes to equity
work,” said Bernal.
He said Grand Valley could become the campus of choice for
faculty of color or women senior managers, and a recognized safe haven
for LGBT youth in Michigan or undocumented students in the state.
