The GVSU Symphony Orchestra will conclude its 2015-16 performance schedule with a concert honoring graduating seniors, and featuring an award-winning student from Daegu, South Korea.

The concert, featuring pianist Da-sol Um, will take place Thursday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m. in Louis Armstrong Theatre, located in the Performing Arts Center.

Um was invited to perform with the orchestra after winning the ensemble's annual student Concerto Competition.

During the concert, Um will perform Robert Schumann's "Piano Concerto." The orchestra's brass section will open the program with "Fanfare in 'La Peri'" by Paul Dukas, and the concert will conclude with Antonin Dvorak's "Symphony No. 6 in D Major."

Um came to Grand Valley as a freshman, a year after taking a piano master class in South Korea under Helen Marlais, associate professor of piano and piano pedagogy. Um is currently a sophomore at Grand Valley pursuing her piano performance major and piano pedagogy certificate. She is also an active accompanist in the Music and Dance Department, studies chamber music with Pablo Mahave-Veglia, associate professor of cello, and gives private lessons to pre-college piano students.

Um won first prize at the Music Association of Daegu Competition in 2012. As a result, she was invited to perform as a piano soloist in 2014 with the Daegu Strings Symphony Orchestra. In the United States, Um earned second place in the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony Orchestra Competition in 2015.

This concert is free and open to the public. For more information, visit the Music and Dance Department website, or call (616) 331-3484.
