John Bancheri, head rowing coach for Grand Valley, received the 2015 Men’s Collegiate Coach of the Year Award December 12.

Bancheri, who has been a rowing coach for 34 years, was recognized at the 23rd annual Joy of Sculling Coaches' Conference in New York, a gathering for head rowing coaches from across the country. Recipients for the award are chosen by rowing coach colleagues from colleges and universities.

Bancheri joined Grand Valley in 2005 after building successful rowing programs at Wichita State, University of Charleston and Marietta College. He mentors aspiring rowing coaches and has led Grand Valley rowing to six American Collegiate Rowing Association Team Points National Championships, among many other accomplishments.

Bob Stoll, director of Student Life, said Bancheri has created a nationally recognized program that competes coast to coast each year.

"The last 10 years have been an exciting time for rowing at Grand Valley," Stoll said. "John has continued to build a strong tradition of rowing excellence at Grand Valley through his innovative training programs. He works hard to help students achieve their personal and team goals."

Bancheri said it's an honor to be recognized by his peers. "I'm proud of Grand Valley rowing and appreciate so much the support, especially from students who have made this university known across the country and world with their talents," he said.
