Academic year gets formal welcome Friday

The formal start to the 2017-2018 academic year begins Friday, August 25, with an address by President Thomas J. Haas to faculty and staff members followed by Convocation ceremonies.

Haas will give his opening address at 10 a.m. at the Cook-DeWitt Center. The event will be live-streamed and can be accessed via a link on the university's homepage at that time.

Provost Maria Cimitile and others will join Haas and formally welcome the campus community during Convocation, set for 11:30 a.m. in the Fieldhouse Arena. Remarks will also be given by Felix Ngassa, professor of chemistry and chair of University Academic Senate, and Jonathan Bowman, president of Student Senate.

Faculty and staff members who plan to process in Convocation should submit the online RSVP form, gvsu.edu/convocation, or by calling the Office of Student Life at (616) 331-2345.

The day's events will conclude with the 2 p.m. dedication of the Thomas J. and Marcia J. Haas Center for Performing Arts.
