Grand Valley's Exercise is Medicine on Campus program was recognized as a "silver status" campus that is dedicated to making physical activity a critical component of the health and wellbeing of faculty, staff, students, and the local community. The award was presented during the 2017 Exercise is Medicine World Congress, held in conjunction with the American College of Sports Medicine's Annual Meeting. 

University Communications earned five bronze Telly Awards for the following videos: #gratitude project, April 2017 Commencement, GVSU holiday, Health North groundbreaking, and Laker Effect. The Telly Awards receives more than 13,000 entries annually from ad agencies, productions companies, TV stations, cable companies, and corporations around the world.

Katie Corker, assistant professor of psychology, and a former student earned "Best Paper of the Year" at the Association for Research in Personality annual meeting for their article, "Do Performance Avoidance Goals Moderate the Effect of Different Types of Stereotype Threat on Women’s Math Performance?"

Jim Penn, associate professor of geography and sustainable planning, served as a panelist for a review of "El Abrazo de la Serpiente/Embrace of the Serpent" at the Grand Rapids Latin American Film Festival.

Al Steinman, director of the Annis Water Resources Institute, gave three invited presentations: "Long-term Monitoring Results in Muskegon Lake" at the Lakeshore Museum Center in Muskegon; "Update on Monitoring and Research Results" at Project Clarity in Holland; and “Restoration of Lakes and Wetlands: A Tale of Three Systems" at the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center at the University of Illinois.

Takeelia Garrett, student ombuds, gave a presentation, "Pecha Kucha," at the International Ombudsman Association Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Brandon Youker, assistant professor of social work, wrote an article, "Dismissing the Goals: A Comparison of Four Goal-Dismissive Goal-Free Evaluations," published in Evaluation and Program Planning. 

Doris Penn, academic advisor for the CLAS Academic Advising Center, served as a panelist for "NN" at the Grand Rapids Latin American Film Festival.

Dan Balfour, professor of public, nonprofit, and health administration, wrote an article, “Praetorianism,” published in the Sage Encyclopedia of Political Behavior.

Rick Albrecht, professor of movement science, gave a webinar, "From Good to Better to Best: Taking our Coaching, and Our Athletes' Experiences, to the Next Level," for the National Alliance for Youth Sports.

Rebecca Davis, professor of nursing, was a co-author of two articles published in Research in Gerontological Nursing, and articles published in Environment and Behavior, Journal of Advanced Nursing, Journal of Gerontological Nursing, and The Gerontologist. All articles focused on wayfinding for people diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

The Kirkhof College of Nursing was granted accreditation for all three of its degree programs (BSN, MSN, and DNP) by the Board of Commissioners of the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education for a full 10 years.
